INTERCLUB COMPETITION THIS SUNDAY JULY 18TH MARYBOROUGH CLAY
TARGET CLUB VERSUS FRASER COAST SPORTING CLAYS 10 AM TRAP MCTC,
FOLLOWED BY SPORTING, CHURCHILL MINES ROAD, LUNCH AVAILABLE
AT SPORTING CLAYS AT A VERY REASONABLE CHARGE. ATTENDANCE NUMBERS
WOULD BE APPRECIATED FOR CATERING PURPOSES AND COMP NUMBERS.
PLEASE PHONE LINDA, 41914656. THANK YOU.
This is our Annual Interclub shoot and it would be great to
see a good roll up from our members. The trophy has been held
by Fraser Coast Sporting Clays for the past two years and we
need to return it back to our trophy cupboard so let's do it
and have as many join in as we can for a great days competition
and fellowship. Remember when shooting the discipline of sporting
clays the secret is more lead, more lead, more lead. If I can
remember!
What a beaut day had by all at our club last month for Holly's
and Andy's Continental Championship competition and to have
them both join us on the day. Targets were great and the competition
results not bad although it did show that the first Saturday
of the month is invaluable practice in this discipline for our
members, proven by one Peter Lewis who attends this day regularly
and who picked up the B Grade High Gun on the day.(The first
High Gun he has ever won, well done.) Congrats to our winners
and again to Irvine Wynyard who won the overall High Gun (3
months in a row) and to Greg Matthews and Glen Wyatt sharing
AA, Linda McGregor A, had her eye in too, and C Grade Jack Zaric,
which will certainly encourage him on to greater things. A BIG
THANK YOU TO HOLLY AND ANDY FOR THEIR SUPPORT. Thank you also
to our visiting shooters from kindred clubs; it is always a
pleasure to have you join us. Steve Whitehead's portable trench
layout proved popular at the end of the shoot with a number
of shooters having a try and finding it a little different.
Results through too from the Marlborough Club in New Zealand
and our Trans Tasman Competition. As you are all aware our scores
were very good from previous years however a new C Grade Junior
shooter across the ditch in his first ever comp decided he would
give everybody a hiding and won it for the Marlborough Club
by 8 points. It is obvious that he will not remain where he
is for long and full credit to Marlborough for their continuance
of the clubs Junior program. There is always next year.
Over the past month members have represented our club at most
of the nearby clubs, Bundaberg and Gympie and also at Mundubbera
at their Central Burnett Citrus Two day Shoot. Malcolm Zipf
shot over the two days and Greg, Nicho and myself on the Sunday.
Zippy picked up a couple of A Grade events and the rest of us
enjoyed a day out in the country. Nice and cool Sunday morning
with a little ice on the windscreens. Very refreshing! A reminder
that Bundy's Annual One day Shoot is on Sunday August 1st a
week after our club comp and it will be an early start at 9.00AM.
This is their first big shoot on the new ground and it would
be great to see as many of our members join them on this day.
Always great competition and wonderful sponsorship offered throughout
the days program.
Our July (this months shoot) on Sunday 25th is our Annual 75
target Double Rise Championship day commencing at 11AM and we
are one of the only clubs in Queensland to shoot this competition
as a 75 target Championship event outside of the State and National
Titles arena. It is frequently shot as two and one day events
down at clubs on the New South Wales and Victorian border hence
the good scores put in by these shooters at National level.
I believe that our club average in double rise has risen well
and obviously this has come from not only this comp but its
inclusion in some of our monthly shoots throughout the year
as well. It must also be said that the boys have the traps tweeked
to throw as good double rise targets as you would receive at
the National ground. This I believe has assisted. In your grade
and overall, every competitor has the opportunity to clean up
some of the booty that this day has on offer and I look forward
to our strong membership support along with a good contingent
of visiting shooters to join us on the day. The girls in the
canteen will require some assistance on the day so if you can
help it would be great and please bring some goodies for afternoon
tea.
At our June meeting the club decided by majority vote to raise
the monthly club competition fee by $5.00 across the board which
includes Ladies, Veteran, and Intermediate. Juniors will remain
the same and practice fees will also have a slight rise to $6.50.
This decision has not been made lightly by the club with considerable
research and ongoing discussions being given to club income
and expenditure by Treasurer Brad. Please make note of these
alterations when paying noms on the day.
We will have a General Meeting on this Sunday commencing at
9.30 am and your input is always welcome for the betterment
of our club and its way forward. Please don't forget when you
have completed your round refill the trap as this helps to keep
the shoot moving. If you are not familiar on how to do this
ask to be shown, it really is very simple and you will feel
as if you are contributing to the overall success of the day.
Good shooting to all over the next four weeks commencing with
our Interclub with Sporting Clays next Sunday AND REMEMBER MORE
LEAD we gotta win it back, our own MCTC clubs 75 target Double
Rise the week after, Bundaberg One Day the following, and Gympie
Clubs monthly comp on August 8th.
Good shooting to all.

New Zealand Clay Target
Association President visits Maryborough Clay Target Club (and opens
our eyes to initiatives in developing our sport)
Keith Livingstone - President
of the New Zealand Clay Target Association - visited the Maryborough
Clay Target Club for some practice on 7 April 2010. He was in town for
the wedding of one our members and couldn't resist the opportunity to
come and shoot some practice at our club.
Shooting with a borrowed
gun Keith still managed to hit 75 out of 75 targets, with only two second
barrels required. After watching such an exemplary demonstration of
shooting skill, we would hate to see how well he can shoot with his
own gun.
Talking after shooting was
completed, he said that we have a wonderful facility for our community,
but suggests that we should be promoting it further by running some
high profile events such as corporate challenges and school programs.
While we have run school programs in the past, we haven't done so for
a few years. I know that Victoria has a very strong schools program,
but is this something we should be looking at on a national basis to
ensure the future of our sport?
Keith explained that In
New Zealand, school programs are seen as a vital aspect of the sport.
Through their Association's efforts, the majority of schools in New
Zealand have clay target shooting as part of their curriculum (as a
sports option, along with the more traditional sports such as netball,
soccer and rugby). This year alone they have approximately 600 school
students taking part in regular practice and competition.
Apart from generally getting
young people involved in an interesting and challenging sport, they
see the schools program as a means of identifying kids with the talent
to go on to represent their country in the various disciplines of clay
target shooting. They run training camps for Down the Line and Skeet,
plus regular competition among participating schools and weekly practice.
They identify those with the talent to participate in special training
for the international shooting disciplines of Olympic Trap and Skeet.
The schools program has
done a great deal to improve their results in international competition.
For the first time ever, New Zealand holds both the Glenn Trophy (DTL)
and Glenn Cup (Skeet). Keith sees the schools program and their Association's
work in developing young talent as key to their success in these Trans
Tasman events. In addition, he was happy to point out that New Zealand's
Open Team beat Australia's at the recent World DTL Championships held
in South Africa.
By coincidence, Keith's visit
came just before Maryborough Clay Target Club's annual Trans Tasman
competition against our sister club in New Zealand, the Marlborough
Clay Target Club. They hold the trophy at the moment and with all the
good work the New Zealanders are putting into talent development in
their sport, it seems that we will have to work very hard to get it
back.
As an aside, in the latest
CTSN (May 2010), there is an article from Tony Turner of the Canberra
International Clay Target Club about 'Growing your club and growing
our sport'. It makes some salient points about the age profile of our
sport and outlines some of the ways they have been working to gain more
shooters, including 'come and try days' and corporate shoots. I would
suggest that we all need to take notice of the success of the New Zealand
Clay Target Association, the Canberra International Clay Target Club
and Victoria's schools program and get out there promoting our sport
and getting as many new shooters involved as we can.
A national program
to involve schools in the sport is possibly the very thing we should
be looking at to bring young shooters into the sport. Even if we only
get one or two new shooters out of each batch of students who come to
the sport through this avenue, it is worth the effort. I know that many
individuals and clubs are doing good work in promoting and growing our
sport, but some coordination and initiative at State and National level
might be just the thing to get the attention of our target groups.

Extension
of Weapons Act Licence Expiry Dates
Over the
next five years all licences (excluding 1 year limited licences and
licences issued to a body) will be extended to have the expiry date
coincide with the licensee's next birthday.
Existing licences expiring on or after 1st October 2008 will be issued
with a written notice on secure watermarked paper advising that their
licence has been extended to coincide with their next birthday.
Please note: it is a condition of the Commissioner's approval that the
written notice must be held with the licence until the latter is renewed
or replaced. Both the notice and licence now form the licence for the
purposes of licence production to a police officer or firearms dealer
under the Weapons Act 1990 and other legislation requirements.
Example: Licence
due to expire 1.11.08 and the licensee's birthday is 11.3.YY - written
notice has been sent to licensee extending the licence to 11.3.09, on
which date the licence now expires and will be subject to the new renewal
date. Once the expiry date on the licence is reached, the written notice
identifies the new expiry date for that licence.
Should you require
further information please do not hesitate to contact Weapons Licensing
Branch via email
or telephone 07 3015 7777
